Letters to the Editor-Today’s “Vietnam” Dear Editor, Yesterday’s Vietnam is today’s Iraq. Yesterday’s puppet South Vietnamese Government is today’s puppet Iraqi government. Yesterday’s Viet Cong is today’s insurgency called, “terrorists”. I know not how many Iraqis died under a cruel dictator with our technological help. But the death toll of Iraqis keeps rising. An American father and son are now responsible for the deaths of more than 100,000 Iraqis. The figure for injured to dead is reportedly 5 to 1. If this ratio is correct some half-million Iraqis are suffering from their injuries from our “war machine”. Excuse me, our “defense establishment”. One does not win hearts and minds by killing people. Let no one doubt that if anyone messes with the United States that we will bring overwhelming force and make that country “go away”. It is called deterrence or control by fear. That is no way to control one’s family, one’s country or the world. The fearless boarded airplanes, you know, and WE also now live in fear. For me that is proof that PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH is a failure. The two E’s said it well. Einstein said after noting the destructions of the first weapons of mass destruction, “Everything has now changed, except man’s way of thinking.” And Eisenhower said, “Every gun that is made takes something from some poor child somewhere in the world.” For as little as fifty gas-fired power plants, a million automobiles, a half-million trucks and ten million washing machines we could have won Iraq and the people there would be loving us. Such production would have strengthened our manufacturing infrastructure. Corporations would have made money. No one would have been killed, nothing would have been destroyed and it would have been so very cheap compared to what is currently going on. I repeat my words from 1968, “SEARCH AND DESTROY, IGNOBLE DUTY.” Peace will not come out of the barrels of our guns. Weapons of mass destruction imperil life of man on earth. Do good. Do Good. DO GOOD and win the world. It’s a religious philosophy never yet practiced. Peace and Love, Hell Unlikely to The following is an actual question given on a University of Washington engineering mid term. The answer was so “profound” that the Professor shared it with colleagues, which is why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well. Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)? Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle’s Law, (gas cools off when it expands and heats up when it is compressed) or some variant. One student, however, wrote the following: “First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate that souls are moving into Hell and the rate they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, lets look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Some of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there are more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle’s Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand as souls are added. This gives two possibilities: 1) If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose. 2) Of course, if Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over. So which is it? If we accept the postulate given to me by Ms. Teresa Banyan during my Freshman year, “...that it will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you.” and take into account the fact that I still have not succeeded in having sexual relations with her, then, #2 cannot be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and will not freeze.” The student received the only “A” given.

Organics at a Crossroads “Regime change” seems to be in the air this fall; whether we are talking about personal lifestyle changes, converting the marketplace, or transforming the political arena. Millions are saying “No!” to junk foods, frankenfoods, pesticides, industrial agriculture, and the general “Wal-Martization” of American life.
Hopeful trends, such as the growth of the organic food and holistic
health sector, suggest that a critical mass of consumers are beginning
to comprehend that our personal and family’s health and well-being are
directly related to what we eat and drink, what we breathe into our
lungs, and what we wear or apply to our skin. The biotech and agri-toxics lobby are planting stories in the press, claiming that organic foods are neither safer nor better than industrial foods. (http://www.organicconsumers.org/organic/attack090704.cfm) Congress doles out $25 billion a year to subsidize biotech and industrial agriculture, while family farmers, who desperately need help to convert to organic and sustainable practices, are getting next to nothing. Finally, global treaties such as NAFTA and the WTO are programmed for disaster, designed to enthrone biotech and industrial agriculture, while driving two billion farmers and rural villagers off the land and into urban slums. What You Can Do: Vote with your consumer dollar! By supporting products and businesses that are established on the principles of Fair Trade and sustainable agriculture, you’re putting your money where your mouth is. One way you can save money, support positive products, and the OCA (Organic Consumers Association), all at the same time, is by purchasing a $10 OCA Organic Coupon book, containing up to $400 worth of savings on nationally distributed products (for a detailed list of coupons visit: http://www.organicconsumers.org/coupons/index.cfm.) Please give us your support now, so we can expand our nationwide public education and mobilization activities... both before and after the upcoming November elections.
