Darwin Award: New Dating Technique

A security guard intending to impress female friends took a deadly gamble, losing his game of Russian roulette at a La Paz fast-food restaurant. Police say Victor, twenty-one, died instantly when he put his .38-caliber revolver to his head and pulled the trigger at a suburban hamburger outlet. Victor was trying to “impress some female friends,” according to newspaper reports. The ladies were not available for comment, but one presumes that they were underwhelmed.

Late Fee

“In 1994, New York City’s Metropolitan Transit Authority docked Michael Durant, a 31-year-old bus driver, a day’s pay for being twelve minutes late for work. His excuse: He had stopped to pull a man out of a burning car on the highway.” (Esquire, January 1995)

Thanks, You ##*!#@!

“New York Jets quarterback Boomer Esiason.. .was driving home after a 28-24 loss to the Miami Dolphins when he had to stop his car because of an accident.... He got out and asked a woman in the car in front of him whether she was all right. Her window was broken and she was crying. Esiason recalls: ‘She looked at me and said, ‘Boomer?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ She said, ‘You guys really (stink). How’d you lose that game today?”’( San Francisco Chronicle, December 7, 1995)

ALL Wet

“In 1981 Peter Stankiewicz of Rockville, Maryland stopped his car and dove into the Potomac River to rescue a driver whose lumber truck had crashed through a bridge railing and plunged 60 feet into the icy water. After hauling the driver to shore, Stankiewicz was informed that his car had been towed to the pound because it was blocking traffic.” (Encyclopedia Brown’s Book of Strange Facts)
